THE DIFFERENT TYPES WATER POLLUTION
- There are many types of water pollution. Here are a couple examples of some:
- Nutrients Pollution: When there are too many nutrients and nitrogen and they act as fertilizers. This helps grow weeds and algae. Due to this water is contaminated and is undrinkable and if there are a lot of algae, they will take up a lot of oxygen. If this occurs then other living things in the ocean may not be able to receive oxygen. This results in the death of many marine lives.
- Surface Water pollution: Harmful chemicals and pollutants are getting and dissolving into fresh surface water found on earth’s surface. Surface water includes rivers, lagoons, and oceans.
- Oxygen Consumption: Bodies of Water have many organisms, living in it. Most specifically, there are two micro-organisms: aerobic (needs oxygen to survive) and anaerobic (does not need oxygen to survive. Quite similar to Nutrient pollution, if there are too much biodegradable materials, it will help support micro-organism growth. When this does happen, micro-organisms use up too much oxygen, resulting in the death of aerobics, however the anaerobic can still survive.
- Ground Water pollution: There are some times when humans apply chemicals and pesticides to soil. Then, the rain will wash this soil into the ground. This affects groundwater, causing pollution underground.
- Microbiological: In some places in the world, their water is infected and polluted with bacteria, viruses, and protozoa. Drinking water polluted and infected water without treating it, can lead to sicknesses and even dead marine life.
- Suspended Matter: There are some chemicals and toxins which do not dissolve when they are poured into the water. As a result they sink to the bottom of the ocean. This can harm and sometimes even kill marine lives, which live at the floor of the ocean.
- Chemicals: Many chemicals that many people use somehow end up in the ocean. These chemicals pollute the ocean and harm aquatic life.
- Oil Spills: One of the most common pollutants of the ocean is something that all of us are familiar with: Oil Spills. When oil is spilt, it can spread on for miles and because oil is less dense than water, it floats on water. Oil spills are very difficult to clean up and they are very costly, but most importantly oil spills can kill marine life. Alberta is home to very frequent oil spills.
